What is LASIK?
Lasik is the ultimate wayof correcting nearsightedness, or myopia.
People with myopia usually have abnormally long eyeball. Like a poorly focused camera, one can't see well with a myopic eye because entering light rays are focused in front of the retina (a layer of light sensitive tissue). Eyeglasses, by bending the incoming light rays, compensate the mis-focusing .
Lasik surgery carves the curvature of your eyeglasses onto your cornea, the front part of your eyeball, which is similar to the lens of a camera. Unlike the previous generations of surgical correction of nearsightedness, Lasik surgery combines precision, simplicity, safety and speed of recovery.
Am I a suitable candidate for LASIK?
Before any surgery, you must first be seen and examined by both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. Working together, they will decide whether you are fit to receive the surgery, and to explain to you all the positive and potential negative effects of the surgery on you.
What happens during the LASIK surgery?
The surgery typically takes less than half an hour (including the preparations), but the actual operation only takes around 15 minute or so. Lasik surgery is made up of two steps
Is LASIK a painful procedure? What should I do to facilitate the procedure?
Throughout the surgery, you are fully awake. You can feel the doctor touching your eyes; but the pain sensation is absent by the anaesthetic eye drop. The surgery began with instillation of an anaesthetic and an antibiotic eye drop. These will ensure the procedure to be painless and clean. Next, the doctor will put in a small device called a lid speculum to hold your eyes open throughout the surgery. You can blink normally without affecting the surgery because the lid speculum will prevent you from being able to close the lids. Small amount of eyeball movements is not a problem because the computerized laser machine can detect and compensate such. To help you keep your eyeball steady, all laser machines have a target light for you to stare at.
What happens after the LASIK operation?
On same day of the surgery, most patient will experience some transient after effects, like mild discomfort, tearing, misty of vision and sensitivity to light. These are all normal and will usually cease after 12 to 24 hours. In patients with large pupils, other unwanted effect like starbursts and halos around lights can remain for months or even longer.
Is LASIK a safe procedure?
Overall speaking, LASIK is an extremely safe procedure. Serious complications are rare. Over- or undercorrections are the commonest, up to a few percent of all cases; but can be solved by a second operation (called enhancement surgery). Flap problems like wrinkling can usually be smoothed out by the doctor. Inflammation, if occurs, is usually easily controlled by early use of eye drops. Infection, with a chance of around one in several thousand procedures, is more dangerous and must be caught and treated as early as possible.

at.
